The organization — along with others that work with immigrants — provides an increasingly important service in a state where the immigrant population is growing faster than the national average. According to the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., the number of immigrants in Virginia rose from 570,279 to 900,243, for an increase of 58 percent, between 2000 and 2011. At a national level, the immigrant population grew 30 percent during that period.
